Tyson Fury is already talking as if the Anthony Joshua fight will add more to Joshua’s career than his own, even with the long-awaited heavyweight clash expected later this year.
Fury returned from a 16-month layoff in April and defeated Arslanbek Makhmudov in front of more than 60,000 fans at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Joshua was ranked number one that night, but chose not to enter the ring for a face-off later, despite months of public discussion about the two finally meeting.
Fury plans another fight in August before facing Joshua later this year, even as he openly questions how much the event would add to his own standing in boxing.
“So here are the facts of this fight. Yeah. Beating Anthony Joshua doesn’t do anything for my career. Nothing improves me. Not everyone expects me to beat him anyway. I’m a big favorite. The world expects me to beat this guy,” Fury told FurociTV.
“That’s why I don’t do anything to beat him. But if he could ever beat me, he’s changed. He is what people think of him. So the cloud chaser he is.”
The former heavyweight champion also revealed that he expects to fight again in August before the Joshua fight is settled for October or November.
“So my fight plan this year with three fights. So it will be April, August, and whenever the big fights are announced, or October, November. We don’t have an opponent yet. But again, it’s never about the opponent. It’s just about me versus me always,” Fury said.
“So whoever the opponent is, if it’s Joe Blogs or if it’s Mike Tyson, it’s all important to me. It’s just the run-out for me. Like, just getting sharper for the bigs.”
He also admitted that the Joshua fight is not guaranteed to survive the extra tune-up.
“Listen, I might get knocked out my next fight in August. So then it’s all over. So I have to take one fight at a time, and they’re all deadly serious fights,” Tyson said.
