Girona and Real Sociedad shared the spoils in a competitive La Liga clash, with Jon Martin’s first goal for Societat canceled out by Cristhian Stuani’s second-half equaliser.
Girona hosted Real Sociedad at the Montilivi Municipal Stadium on May 14, 2026, in a match between two teams fighting for different goals. The locals took 19th position with 39 points from 35 games, while the Society finished eighth with 44 points. Girona arrived looking for points to reinforce their hopes of survival, while Sociedad wanted to climb the table.
Real Sociedad struck first through Jon Martin in the 28th minute. The away team striker found the back of the net early and gave Sociedad a crucial lead. Martin’s clinical finish rewarded Society’s brilliant opening to the game.
Girona controlled possession during the first half, enjoying 60% of the ball. However, the defensive shape of the Society proved difficult to break. The home side created chances but were unable to equalize before the break.
Referee bookings increased as the first half progressed. Alejandro Barrenetxea received a yellow card in the 12th minute for the Society. The physical nature of the contest was evident from the start.
The second half has brought a renewed intensity on the part of the locals. Girona pushed forward aggressively, looking for an equaliser. The defense of the Society has faced sustained pressure from the attacking locals.
Cristhian Stuani tied the game in the 66th minute. The Girona forward hid his chance to tie the teams. Stuani’s goal shifted the momentum firmly to the home side.
Card count spiraled as the match progressed. Javi Aramburu, Mikel Oyarzabal, and Sergio Gomez all received yellows for Sociedad. Alexandre Francès, Javi Roca, Diego Caleta-Car, Gonzalo Carrera, and Blas Turrientes earned cautions for their respective teams.
Both teams created clear and limited chances after Stuani’s goal. Álex Remiro made four important saves for the Society. The Girona goalkeeper has only recorded one save but has received fewer direct threats overall.
The statistics reflected Girona’s dominance in possession and shot creation. Girona attempted 29 shots against the six of the club. Expected goals favored the home team by 2.22 to 0.33, but Sociedad’s efficiency almost held firm.
Girona managed 560 passes with 91% accuracy, while controlling the pace. The Society completed 401 passes with 82% accuracy while defending deep for much of the contest. The away team’s discipline kept them in the game despite being outplayed.
