Richard Torrez Jr. says Frank Sanchez remains a dangerous opponent ahead of their IBF heavyweight eliminator on May 23 in Egypt, but he believes pressure and pace could eventually break Sanchez down.
Torrez discussed Sanchez during an interview this week ahead of their fight on the “Glory in Giza” card near the Pyramids of Giza.
“You know, I think Frank, because he’s of Cuban descent, he has that Cuban style. He’s able to box and unbox his butt when he needs to,” Torrez Jr. said. to the mr. Verzace podcast at Ring Magazine said.
“I think he has a really strong backhand. I think he knows how to kind of lull you from moment to moment to where he can get a certain shot that he wants.
“And he’s very good at dictating a bit of pace.
“However, I think where he falls short a little bit is in that tempo. If you can take control of that, pressure him and impose your will on him, I think that’s where things fundamentally start to break down in the game plan.
“I think we saw that with Kabayel, and I think that’s something that I’m going to kind of emulate and that I’m already doing in my fights.”
Sanchez enters the fight after suffering the first loss of his career against Agit Kabayel last year. Their fight ended after Sanchez had problems with his leg during the match.
Torrez also addressed Sanchez’s recent knee problem, which delayed the elimination earlier this year.
“However, I’m going there to prepare for the best, Frank. I’m going there, preparing for a Frank who has two great knees.
“That’s the Frank I’m hoping to expect because I want to fight the best. I don’t want to fight someone who’s at 60%.”
The undefeated Torrez will enter the fight with a record of 13-0 with 11 knockouts. Sanchez brings a 25-1 record with 18 knockouts into the heavyweight eliminator.
