David Morrell says his career is far from over after suffering a knockout loss to Zak Chelli in England last Saturday, but questions are already growing about whether Morrell should return to 168lbs after another tough performance at lightweight.
Morrell was stopped in the 10th and final round after a competitive fight on the undercard of the Fabio Wardley vs. Daniel Dubois heavyweight card. The loss was Morrell’s second loss in his last three fights following his decision loss to David Benavidez in February 2025.
“This does not mean that David Morrell’s career is over,” Morrell said on Instagram. “We have to take this as a lesson from everything and go on with more strength.
“We’ll be back soon and with more news for you.”
Morrell also reassured fans that he is recovering well after the knockout.
“For those who are worried, I’m fine and healthy, thank God.
“A man is not measured by the times he falls, but the times he rises.
“This is the beginning of a new phase, not the end of the race.”
The loss to Chelli added to growing criticism surrounding Morrell’s move to 175 pounds. Since moving up from super middleweight in August 2024, Morrell entered 2025 undefeated but has now lost two of his last three fights since making the switch to light heavyweight.
Morrell was dropped in July during his split decision win over previously unbeaten Imam Khataev before losing to David Benavidez and then being stopped by Zak Chelli.
Boxing analyst Chris Mannix was among those who suggested Morrell might need to rebuild after the loss at super middleweight.
The 28-year-old Cuban now has a record of 12-2 with 9 knockouts after entering 2025 undefeated and is considered one of boxing’s most dangerous young contenders.
