Alavés pulled off a stunning upset against league leaders Barcelona, winning 1-0 at Estadio Mendizorrotza through Ibrahim Diabaté’s first-half goal on 13 May 2026.
Barcelona arrived in Vitoria as the dominant force in the League. The visitors topped the table with 91 points from 35 games and an impressive five-game winning streak. Alaves, on the other hand, finished 18th with just 37 points and struggled with inconsistent form. Few expected the hosts to threaten the league leaders.
The game started with Barcelona controlling possession as expected. The visitors imposed the game from the first minutes, keeping Alavés collected in their own field. However, the hosts remained compact and disciplined, looking to capitalize on opportunities on the counter-attack.
Alavés struck with devastating timing just before the break. In the 45th minute plus one second, Ibrahim Diabaté found the back of the net to give the locals a surprise advantage. The goal came from a moment of vulnerability in Barcelona’s defense, and Diabaté finished clinically to thrill the home crowd.
Barcelona pressed hard to equalize as the second half began. Marcus Rashford was shown a yellow card in the 46th minute for a failed challenge. The visitors created chances but did not convert them into goals.
The visiting team dominated the ball possession and registered 77 percent of the ball. Barcelona completed 605 of 676 passes with 89 percent accuracy, showing their technical quality. Despite the control, they managed only three goalkeeper saves and zero shots on goal.
Alavés defended resolutely to protect their advantage. The home team had limited possession to 23 percent, but they made their chances count. They completed 112 of 190 passes while absorbing Barcelona’s attacking pressure.
Substitutions came late in the game as Barcelona looked for a breakthrough. Álvaro Cortés emerged as Barcelona’s standout player, earning a grade of 7.7 for his defensive work. Jules Koundé also impressed at the back for the visitors.
Diabaté’s performance was crucial for Alaves. The goalscorer registered two shots on goal in his limited time on the pitch. He played 64 minutes and earned a 7.2 rating for his contribution to the win.
Barcelona registered five shots off target and blocked three attempts by Alavés. Expected goals data showed Barcelona at 0.59 compared to Alavés’ 0.66, indicating that the home side created slightly better chances despite having less possession.
Yellow cards punctuated the contest. Rashford got the first in the 46th minute, followed by Abdelhamid Rebbach for Alaves in the 81st minute. João Cancelo was booked in the 89th minute as the tension mounted.
This result offers little immediate change to the league standings. Barcelona remains at the top with 91 points, while Alavés remains 18th with 37 points. However, the win gives the struggling hosts a vital boost in their fight for survival.
