Fabio Wardley breaks silence after Dubois defeat

Fabio Wardley thanked fans and praised Daniel Dubois after suffering the first defeat of his professional career in Manchester on Saturday night.

Wardley was stopped in the 11th round after a brutal heavyweight fight in which both men were repeatedly hurt. Despite being dropped twice early on, Dubois recovered and gradually took control with heavier shots and sustained pressure before referee Howard Foster stepped in late in the fight.

Wardley later released a message on social media reflecting on the punishment he took during the fight.

The official scorecards had Dubois leading 96-92 on all three cards at the time of the stoppage after he began to take over with cleaner right hands and more consistent pressure in the middle rounds.

The loss cost Wardley the WBO heavyweight title and ended his undefeated run, but the fight also raised his standing with many fans due to the punishment he absorbed as he continued to trade with Dubois deep into the contest.

People close to Wardley have reportedly confirmed that he has returned home following treatment at the arena and a hospital visit after sustaining cuts and swelling during the fight.

A rematch clause is believed to be in place, although it remains unclear whether Wardley will exercise it immediately following the damage both heavyweights absorbed during the bout.

Dubois could also face pressure from the WBO over a mandatory defense against undefeated heavyweight Moses Itauma, who has been increasingly linked with the title picture following his recent victories. A rematch with Wardley could delay one of the biggest British heavyweight fights available right now.
