Burnley and Aston Villa shared the spoils in a thrilling 2-2 draw at Turf Moor, with both sides trading blows in an entertaining Premier League game that saw four goals in 51 minutes.
Burnley went into the game rooted in 19th place with just four wins from 35 games. Villa arrived in fifth position, chasing the European classification with 17 victories of their campaign. The visitors controlled possession and territory throughout, but the hosts showed resilience and clinical finishing when opportunities arose.
Jhon Anthony gave Burnley an electric start in the eighth minute, striking early to set the tone for an open game. The home crowd sensed that an upset against the higher-ranked visitors might be possible. However, Villa’s quality soon came to the fore as they built momentum in the first half.
Ross Barkley leveled things up in the 42nd minute, restoring parity just before the break. The midfielder’s finish showed Villa’s threat from open play. Burnley headed into the half knowing they needed to maintain their defensive shape and capitalize on counter-attacking opportunities.
The second half burst into life immediately. Ollie Watkins put Villa ahead in the 56th minute, seemingly settling the game. The striker’s goal appeared to have shifted the momentum decisively to the visitors.
Burnley refused to give up. Just three minutes later, Zeki Flemming equalized in the 59th minute with a composed finish. The striker’s goal sparked scenes of celebration at Turf Moor and showed his side were very much in the game.
Flemming received a yellow card moments after his goal for his celebrations. Tyrick Mings had earlier been booked for Villa in the 49th minute. Both teams pressed for a winner but neither could find the breakthrough in a closely contested final.
The stats revealed Villa’s dominance in possession and territory. The visitors completed 510 passes with 86% accuracy compared to Burnley’s 255 passes at 73%. Villa also had more shots on target with seven to Burnley’s six, although the expected goal figures showed the game was closer than possession suggested.
Youri Tielemans scored 7.6 for Villa, while Ollie Watkins scored but was rated 7.2. Hannibal Mejbri impressed at Burnley with a 7.2 rating despite playing just 69 minutes. Kyle Walker’s defensive work also earned him a 7.2.
The draw leaves Burnley 19th on 20 points with five consecutive defeats on their form guide. Villa remain fifth on 58 points, but their recent form has been reduced to two defeats in their last five. Both teams will reflect on the possibilities of getting the three points in what turned out to be a hard-fought game.
