David Morrell says he is still disappointed that his planned showdown with Callum Smith has been cancelled, but the Cuban contender is now focused on making an impression in his long-awaited British debut this Saturday night.

Morrell takes on Zak Chelli on the undercard of Fabio Wardley vs. Daniel Dubois after Smith pulled out of their scheduled clash last month due to injury.
The 175lb contender admitted he still hopes the Smith fight is revisited as he was keen to experience fights in Liverpool after hearing so much about the atmosphere from British fans.
“I haven’t heard any news that it’s been rescheduled, but I hope it is. I’ve heard a lot about that arena and that environment in the UK, and I’m eager to show the fans what I can do,” Morrell said DAZN News.
Cuban-born Morrell has now spent more than 200 days pursuing the Smith fight after the WBO previously ordered the bout, but no new date has been announced.
Saturday’s appearance gives Morrell an opportunity to rebuild momentum after his loss to David Benavidez, a fight that raised his profile despite the loss. Morrell hurt Benavidez several times during that match and showed he can compete with one of the division’s top fighters.
The Cuban contender believes those experiences have prepared him for the next phase of his light heavyweight career as he looks to move back into title contention.
“In this game, it’s about who you fight. If you don’t fight guys at your level, then you look sensational. But when you fight guys at your level, it changes,” Morrell said.
Morrell’s immediate focus remains on Chelli finally fighting in front of a British crowd after last month’s disappointment. A strong showing on Saturday would quickly put him back in the mix for big fights against light heavyweights.
