Why This LIV Pro Will ‘Never Return’ To PGA Tour: ‘Ready To Retire’

With the future of LIV Golf very much in doubt, one LIV professional is considering his future in the game. That future “definitely” will not include the PGA Tour.

In his submission, Pieters shed light on the “gloomy” atmosphere. when the latest LIV funding news was releasedwhile also stating that he will “never return” to the PGA Tour.

Thomas Pieters to retire before PGA Tour return: ‘I’ll be forgotten’

When the first reports broke that Saudi Arabia PIF will withdraw funds from LIV Golf, Pieters didn’t know what to believe. He didn’t either the rest of his countrymen LIV.

They were all in Mexico preparing for the LIV Golf Mexico City event. With no official word from the league, players began to speculate whether that week’s tournament would happen.

Pieters said the “atmosphere was very somber” and that he made a phone call home to let his family know he was prepared to “retire” the country if necessary.

“I called home and I was like I’m going to retire on Monday if they pull the plug that fast, and that was fine with me,” Pieters said in “Dan on Golf” podcast.. “The atmosphere was very gloomy… I got fed up after about three or four hours.”

The veteran pro, who has won six DP World Tour events in his long career and spent time playing on the PGA Tour, sought to explain his unique perspective, arguing that unlike the major players, he “will be forgotten.”

“I’ve benefited a lot from it already and achieved a lot of things that I didn’t think were possible when I was a kid growing up in Belgium,” said Pieters. “But I’m going to be forgotten, which is fine. I’m not Brooks Koepka, or Rory, and I’m totally fine with that.”

Retirement, however, is not a certainty for Pieters if LIV Golf ceases to exist. He said he might try to play DP World Tour and be closer to home. But one thing is certain: he will not be returning to the PGA Tour.

“I’m definitely never going back to the PGA Tour. I’ve never liked that life. And that’s not me going on the PGA Tour, it’s not for me,” Pieters explained. “I tried it and I just wasn’t happy there. If (LIV Golf) leaves, maybe I’ll try to play some on the European Tour or I don’t know. I really don’t know.”

He continued: “I’m not worried about it at this point because I feel like I still have a job to focus on these next six, seven tournaments at LIV and then we’ll see. They’re obviously trying to put it together next year. We’ll see.”
