By Matt Oxley:
Come on, it’s time to check out the best competition of all time.
You may have noticed, but a lot has been changing in MotoGP lately. New owners, new rules, new tracks and the end of the 1000cc-era. It’s amazing, isn’t it? Many people turn to the past in search of answers when they are unsure about the future. After all, it’s often only when we look back at where we’ve come from that we can truly see how far we’ve come and how much things have changed. But turn the clock back twenty years. What do we get? Well, it’s the last hurray for the 990cc. There’s plenty of money courtesy of the tobacco companies, but the sponsors won’t be back next year. In other words: it’s the end of an era, again.
So, Valencia 2006. In one corner, there’s the late but great Nicky Hayden, aka The Kentucky Kid. In the other corner is Il Dottore itself. Whoever wins the race wins the race. It’s one of the most underrated stories in MotoGP history, ending with the ‘greatest quote of my life’.
That’s Matt’s saying, by the way.
