Brentford demolished West Ham 3-0 at home to secure a dominant win, with an own goal, a penalty and a late strike sealing a complete performance.
Brentford produced a clinical display against struggling West Ham on May 2, moving to 48 points in ninth place. West Ham’s poor form continued as they slipped to 17th with just 36 points from 34 games. The Hammers needed a response after recent mixed results, but instead faced a relentless home side hungry for three points.
The game turned decisively early on when Kostas Mavropanos turned the ball into his own net in the 15th minute. West Ham’s defensive failure gave Brentford an unexpected lead. The own goal set the tone for what would become a one-sided game.
Brentford controlled possession with 48% of the ball and created real danger throughout the opening period. They managed six shots on goal and dominated the midfield battle. West Ham struggled to dominate, managing just four shots on target in the first half.
The visitors pushed forward without finding the cutting edge needed to trouble Brentford’s defence. Mads Hermansen made several routine saves for West Ham as the home side pressed for a second goal. The half ended with Brentford firmly in control and West Ham searching for answers.
The second half began with West Ham desperate to change the narrative. However, Brentford’s intensity never dropped. Igor Thiago doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute, putting the game beyond doubt.
West Ham’s frustration grew as the yellow cards arrived, with Tomas Castellanos and Crysencio Summerville both booked in the 62nd minute. Brentford remained composed and clinical. Mads Kayode was booked for the home side in the 73rd minute.
Mikkel Damsgaard sealed the victory with a third goal in the 82nd minute, capping off a commanding performance. The Danish winger finished with a grade of 8.7, the highest of the match. West Ham could not recover from the early setback.
The stats told the story of Brentford’s superiority. Brentford managed 14 total shots compared to West Ham’s 13, with superior accuracy in the box. Brentford’s expected goals stood at 2.06 compared to West Ham’s 0.71, showing the quality of chances created.
Brentford passed the ball with 79% accuracy on 323 passes, controlling the tempo throughout. West Ham completed 264 accurate passes from 339 attempts, but lacked the necessary precision in attacking areas. Mathias Jensen anchored Brentford’s midfield with five tackles in 98 minutes.
This result leaves Brentford in mid-table safety as West Ham’s struggles deepen. The Hammers remain in the relegation zone with 16 defeats in 34 games. Brentford will look to build on that performance in their remaining games.
