Mumbai Indians faced a significant setback IPL 2026 campaign as experienced New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner is out for the rest of the tournament due to a right shoulder injury. With the five-time champions already struggling in the points table, losing one of their key overseas players adds to their growing list of worries.
Mitchell Santner ruled out of IPL 2026
Santner’s injury problems started earlier this month during Mumbai Indians’ April 4 clash against Delhi Capitals. When he took the field in that match, he initially looked manageable on his non-bowling shoulder. However, the discomfort forced him to miss the next game against Rajasthan Royals on April 7.
After a brief recovery period, the left-arm spinner returned to action and faced Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 12. He also played against Gujarat Titans on April 20 and showed signs of getting his rhythm back. Unfortunately, during a high-pressure clash against Chennai Super Kings on 23 April, Santner re-injured the same shoulder while fielding, aggravating the problem and ultimately ending his campaign.
Despite limited appearances this season, Santner has made useful contributions with the ball. He took five wickets in four matches and often provided control during medium passes. His calm presence and ability to bowl in pressure situations made him an important asset in Mumbai’s bowling setup.

A star spinner begins with experience and supervision
Mumbai Indians were brought in to cover for Santner’s absence Kehsav MaharajAnother experienced left arm spinner with a strong reputation in T20 cricket. Although the South African has only played two IPL matches in the past – both for Rajasthan Royals in 2024 – his overall T20 record makes him a credible choice.
Maharaj claimed 191 wickets in 218 T20 matches, highlighting his consistency and effectiveness in leagues and international cricket. He also impressed in the SA20 competition where he scored 39 goals over four seasons.
His ability to control the flow of runs and also strike at crucial moments could be valuable for Mumbai, especially on slower Indian pitches where spin is often crucial.
