David Benavidez believes that size alone will not decide his fight with Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez. Heading into their cruiserweight title clash, Benavidez says the edge will come from speed, combinations and a style he doesn’t think Ramirez has handled before.
Benavidez said Ramirez is the bigger man and is used to naturally facing bigger opponents at cruiserweight, but he doesn’t see that as a problem. He believes the slower pace common at the weight will work in his favor once the punches start flying.
Benavidez said Ramirez has never faced anyone like him in an official fight. While the two have chatted in the past, Benavidez has made it clear that he sees a big difference between gym rounds and handling him under the lights over twelve rounds.
“There are a lot of opportunities to hit him with a lot of combinations because he’s slower,” Benavidez told Double3 Coverage. “My speed, my movement, my defense will be too much for him, and I will definitely overwhelm him and drown him with pressure and volume.”
It is interesting that he so casually dismisses the size gap. While Zurdo Ramirez is a natural Cruiserweight and holds the WBA/WBO unified titles, Benavidez is betting that speed and volume are the universal equalizers.
Benavidez talks like a man who thinks he’s found a flaw in the system. Moving up to cruiserweight, he’s convinced his hand speed will look like a blur compared to the 200-pounder. But this is where the concern about the massacre comes in.
He is already talking about this being “His Era”. When a fighter looks past a unified champion like Ramirez to a September crown or a legacy-defining run, they usually let their chins out.
On the other hand, the oddsmakers don’t see a carnage, at least not for Benavidez. He sits as a -600 favorite for a reason. Most analysts think he’s simply special enough that his volume will break Zurdo’s rhythm before the size difference even becomes a factor.
