Como cruised to a 2-0 win at Genoa, with early pressure and a clinical finish providing a crucial win for the sixth-placed side.
Genoa welcomed Como to the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris on April 26 looking to move away from the lower reaches of Serie A. The hosts sat in 14th place with 39 points from 33 games, while Como arrived as genuine contenders in sixth place with 58 points. Genoa’s recent form has been promising with two wins in their last five matches, but Como arrived in Liguria unbeaten in their previous two matches.
Como struck with devastating speed in the early stages. Anastasios Douvikas latched on to a loose ball in the Genoa penalty area and fired past the keeper after just 10 minutes. The first goal set the tone for a game where the visitors controlled proceedings from the start.
Genoa responded with more intensity, but struggled to create clear chances. They managed just one shot on target in the first half despite enjoying 50 percent possession. The hosts’ passing was accurate, completing 82 per cent of their 456 pass attempts, but they lacked penetration in the final third.
Como’s defense remained organized and disciplined for the first 45 minutes. Visiting goalkeeper Jean Butez was untroubled and made a save to keep his side’s clean sheet intact. At the half, Como had a narrow but deserved lead.
In the second half, Genoa pushed for an equaliser, but Como’s defense held firm. The visitors doubled their lead in the 68th minute when Aboubacar Diao added a second goal, ending Genoa’s hopes of a comeback. Diao’s finish confirmed Como’s superiority and sent a clear message about his title credentials.
Genoa created chances but lacked the precision needed to break Como’s backline. The hosts’ expected goals figure of 0.59 reflects their limited quality in attacking areas. Meanwhile, Como’s xG of 0.98 showed his efficiency in turning his limited opportunities into goals.
Both teams were shown yellow cards late in the game as tempers were flaring. Junior Messias was booked for Genoa in the 90th minute, while Como’s MO Kempf joined them on the book moments later. The final whistle confirmed Como’s overall victory.
Statistically, the game remained tight in possession and shots. Como recorded two shots on goal compared to Genoa, and both teams completed more than 80 percent of their passes. However, Como’s clinical finishing completely separated the sides.
The result is significant for the seasons of both clubs. Como consolidates its position among the elite of the league and maintains its push towards the European classification. Genoa, meanwhile, remain in 14th place and face continued struggles in their battle for mid-table safety.
Douvikas earned a 7.6 rating for his opening goal and overall contribution, while Lucas Da Cunha impressed with a 7.5 rating and provided crucial support in attack. For Genoa, midfielder Vitinha worked hard throughout but was unable to inspire his teammates to find the back of the net.
