Aprilia expects the two riders to battle it out. But if their title race is still fierce at the end of the season, Hodgson believes Aprilia will need to beat Bezecic to clinch the championship bike trophy.

“Now this is a good problem for Aprilia. Martin was number 1 last season, but injuries and contract disputes did not help, and leaving at the end of the season meant that Martin’s top rider position was not fixed.

“Bezzecchi is number 1, and Martin missed the test, so the bike and the team are now ready for Italy.

They’ll never knock Martin but if we get to the end of the season and it’s tight between the two, we don’t see Aprilia giving up that number 1 plate and going to another manufacturer.

“The season leader so far, Marco Bezecchi, is now entering a new stage of his career, and this could be crucial.

“It’s a test of character, winning a race, leading the championship is one thing, but winning the MotoGP World Championship is a completely different matter.

“It’s never easy, but it’s another challenge when you’re up against Marc Marquez. We’ll see what Bezcicchi is made of – and so will he.”

As things stand, Marquez is still a ways behind Bezecchi. But the famous Spanish rider cannot be excluded yet, and this year he will pose a threat to Italy.

This season is make-or-break for Bezecchi as a championship-caliber rider. If he wants to keep up with the championship, he must make sure that he can finish when it counts.
