Adam Smith reveals Ben Whittaker summer fight plan

Ben Whittaker’s next few months are already taking shape following his quick knock-out win in Liverpool, with Adam Smith outlining a busy summer schedule that should finally see the light heavyweight move on to stronger tests

Smith said Whittaker is expected to return to the United States at the end of June on the Jaron “Boots” Ennis card before returning to Britain later in the summer for a big hometown date in Birmingham.

Whittaker stopped Brian Suarez in two rounds last weekend and looked sharp throughout, adding another early finish to a stretch that helped rebuild attention around him after the first Liam Cameron fight ended in a draw.

Smith said the June outing would help expose Whittaker to a bigger audience ahead of a bigger domestic night later in the year.

“He’s going to fight in America at the end of June on the Boots Ennis card. That’s good. Get him out to the global audience. Then he’s going to come back here late summer, maybe early September, and fight in Birmingham in a big fight,” Adam Smith told talkSport Boxing.

Smith also mentioned the type of British opponents that could come next, naming Lyndon Arthur, Brad Rea and Craig Richards as possible options once Whittaker returns home.

In the longer term, Smith believes the bigger domestic clashes against Joshua Buatsi and Anthony Yarde should come within the next year if Whittaker keeps winning.

“The Buatsis and Yards should happen sometime in the next 6 to 12 months.”

Whittaker has had a lot of publicity since turning pro, but activity and matches now seem more serious. The next two fights should say more than the first ten.
