Manchester City secured a narrow 1-0 win at Turf Moor, with Erling Haaland’s fifth-minute goal proving decisive in a dominant display that left Burnley searching for answers.
Burnley went into the game rooted in 19th place with just four wins from 33 games. Manchester City came in as rivals in second place, unbeaten in their last two games and in the form of genuine title contenders. The contrast in league position told the story before the game even started.
The city wasted no time asserting its authority. After five minutes, Haaland struck to give the visitors an early lead. The Norwegian striker’s clinical finish set the tone for a performance that would see City dominate possession and chances throughout the 90 minutes.
Burnley struggled to grab a point in the early exchanges. Martin Dúbravka made several important saves to keep his team in the contest. The Clarets’ defensive form held firm despite City’s sustained pressure in the first half.
However, City’s control of the ball was total. Rayan Cherki created chances and tested Dúbravka repeatedly. The visitors completed 603 accurate passes from 666 attempts, a remarkable 91% accuracy rate that showed their technical dominance.
The second half followed a similar pattern. City continued to probe and attack with precision. Burnley defended resolutely but lacked the attacking threat needed to trouble the City keeper.
Dúbravka proved to be Burnley’s best player, making eight saves to keep the deficit to just one goal. His 9.3 rating reflects his crucial contributions in avoiding a more heavy defeat. Ward-Prowse and Hartman worked tirelessly in midfield to protect their defence.
City’s expected goals figure of 3.08 was significantly higher than Burnley’s 0.57, highlighting the gulf in quality. The visitors registered a total of 27 shots compared to Burnley’s nine. City’s 66% possession advantage meant the home side spent much of the game defending.
Burnley managed just one shot on target all game. His four offside decisions suggested an occasional desperation to try to break down City’s defensive lines. The home side’s attack proved insufficient to test the City goalkeeper in any meaningful way.
Haaland’s first goal was decisive. The 27-year-old forward has finished with two shots on goal from four attempts. His movement and positioning created the platform for City’s dominant performance.
This result extends City’s unbeaten run and strengthens their title credentials. Burnley’s struggles continue, with the club now facing an uphill battle to avoid relegation. The Claretins remain 19th with 20 points in 33 games, while City consolidate second place with 67 points.
Burnley need to regroup quickly ahead of their next game. City will be looking to build on this dominant display in their quest for league glory.
