Getafe secured a crucial 1-0 win at Real Sociedad, with an early penalty from Bautista Méndez proving decisive in a closely contested La Liga game at the Reale Arena.
Real Sociedad dominated possession, but could not break down a determined Getafe defense. The visitors soaked up the pressure throughout and took advantage of their limited chances to secure three vital points in the battle for European qualification.
Getafe scored early and decisively in the 14th minute when Méndez converted from the penalty spot. Clinical finishing gave the away side a dream start and forced Society to chase the game from the early stages.
However, the Society’s misery deepened just 15 minutes later. Jon Gorrotxategi turned the ball into his own net in the 29th minute, compounding the home team’s problems. What looked like a recoverable deficit now looked like a mountain to climb.
The first half ended in a scrappy game with both teams racking up yellow cards. Abqar, Iglesias and MarÃn received cautions as the intensity increased. Sociedad created chances but lacked precision in the final third.
The Society entered the second half with renewed purpose, launching wave after wave of attacks. They generated 13 shots in total compared to Getafe’s five, but David Soria was equal in every test. The goalkeeper made three crucial saves to protect his team’s advantage.
The Royal Society’s possession statistics told the story of their dominance. They controlled the ball for 66 percent of the game and completed 416 of 497 passes with 84 percent accuracy. Despite this control, their expected goals figure stood at just 1.52.
The defensive organization of Getafe frustrated the whole Society. Juan Iglesias led the visiting team’s defense with an 8.0 rating, going four innings and keeping his team compact. Djene Dakonam and the entire backline remained disciplined under sustained pressure.
In the last stages both teams visibly tired. Substitutions and tactical adjustments failed to unlock Getafe’s stubborn set-up. The Society moved forward relentlessly, but failed to find the breakthrough it so desperately needed.
The late cautions came as frustration mounted. Boselli, Nyom and Milla received yellow cards for Sociedad in stoppage time, while Remiro put them on the caution list. The intensity of the matches never diminished despite the score.
This result brings Getafe to 41 points in eighth position, while the Society remains seventh with 42 points. Both teams are still in the fight for European football, but Getafe’s away win keeps their hopes alive. The Society must recover quickly to maintain their push for the top six.
Real Sociedad will look to recover from this disappointment in their next game. Getafe, meanwhile, can take confidence from a hard-fought win at home against one of La Liga’s most attacking teams.
