Ben Whittaker needed less than three minutes to turn his Liverpool main event into a statement, stopping Brian Nahuel Suarez in the opening round at the Liverpool Arena on Saturday night.
Referee Steve Gray stopped the fight at 2:24 of round one after Whittaker (11-0-1, 8 KOs) dropped Suarez (21-5, KOs) with a booming right hand and the Argentine veteran was unable to continue.
Whittaker entered the ring under pressure to deliver after months of scrutinizing his progress and matchups. Instead of a slow start, the undefeated light heavyweight came out sharp, poised and aggressive, taking center stage early and forcing Suarez backwards.
The finish came quickly. Whittaker launched a right hand over the top that crashed into Suarez and sent him down hard. Suarez beat the count, but the fight was waved off moments later when it became clear he was in no condition to continue.
After the stoppage, Suarez complained that the punch landed in the back of the head. There was frustration in his corner, but Gray let the result stand, and there was no turnaround.
It was the type of finish Olympic silver medalist Whittaker needed in 2020, as it was another showcase fight for him against a craftsman and not a world-class opponent. He’s never lacked for attention or flair, but a quick knockout in a headline slot gives fans something more substantial to point to than ramblings and soundbites.
Questions about the level of opposition will remain because Suarez came in as a lower-level opponent, but Whittaker could only beat the man in front of him. He did it quickly, cleanly enough for the officials and left with momentum on his side.
