10 ways a beginner golfer can get the ball in the air
While it takes practice to hone these skills, by following the 10 tips below, you’ll speed up the process and be on your way to getting it the way you hope.
1. Watch slow motion impact videos
If you’re a beginner golfer, it can be strange to see how a golf ball goes in the air – because it’s kind of counterintuitive. This is why watching slow motion videos can be helpful to see the club hitting the ball first and then the ground, which is the correct way to make contact.
One of my favorite videos to watch is actually on YouTube and it’s something I tell my students all the time.
2. Ball, then ground
To make good contact, you need to make contact with the ball first and then hit the ground. By doing this, you will create proper separation on the target side of the ball.
To do this, the clubhead must continue down when it reaches the ball so that it is still landing at impact. If you understand this, the tendency to pick up or lift the ball should be less.
3. Attitude is almost always key
I believe that good posture is the key to making strong contact. Having great golf posture means bending forward from the hips and letting your hands hang directly under your shoulders. Being balanced will help the club come down to the ground, creating the kind of contact you need to get the ball in the air.
4. The arms are extended downwards during the lift
To properly get the clubhead off the ground, you need to extend your arms down toward the ground on the downswing. For consistent success with this, focus on your trail arm, which naturally folds in the backswing and should be extended and straightened during this type of athletic movement. You can practice this sensation by simply hitting a ball into the ground from your golf stance.
5. The weight moves forward
If you’re a beginner golfer who often bends over backwards to try to lift the ball, this is your reminder to avoid doing so. Instead, you should naturally shift your weight toward the lead foot in your down and forward swing, which helps the club make contact with the ground after hitting the golf ball. When you fall back, you’ll likely hit the ground first, which produces a thick thud.
6. Break tons of tees
A good way to learn first contact with the ball is by hitting a low tee. I think he’s less inclined to lift the ball when he’s tired versus when he’s on the ground. So get it high enough at first and try to break it with your clubhead as it swings. Do this over and over, lowering the tee as your ball-striking improves.
7. Hit the tip forward
If you are a more advanced golfer, a good way to practice chipping is by placing one on the ground on the target side of the golf ball.
When you swing, your club should hit and sweep the tee right off the ground and barely sweep the grass. This is an easy way to train yourself to hit the ground as your weight moves forward after impact, and it also allows for a great look.
8. Scratch training
Another good ball hitting drill, you can use this whether you are practicing or playing.
Start at address and scratch the grass in a semi-circle going forward (so don’t do any backswing). When you do this, you really press the clubhead into the ground, allowing your heel to come up. This is what your forward movement should do and can help those players who tend to catch or thin the ball.
A good training aid to practice this exercise from home is Divot Board.
9. Hitting the ground is okay
Many beginning players seem to think that hitting the ground is a bad thing, so they often avoid doing it at all costs. But you should change your mind if you’re looking for better hitting skills.
Understand that hitting the ground is necessary to get the ball in the air, but make sure you know where it happens – after the hit and on the target side of the ball, not before.
10. Use a balanced conclusion
You should always finish your golf swing in balance, making sure to maintain this position until the ball lands. Doing this will give you the chance to check that your trailing heel is off the ground so that your weight is forward and towards the target.
