IPL 2026 clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) What happened at the Wankhede Stadium continues to make headlines not only because of the action on the pitch but also because of the disciplinary incident. Tim David.
Tim David was suspended for a referee dispute
The RCB batsman has been suspended by the BCCI for violating the IPL Code of Conduct during the match. David was fined 25 percent of his match fee and given one demerit point for failing to follow the referee’s instructions on two separate occasions. The IPL confirmed the decision in an official statement, explaining that despite being classified as a level 1 offence, the actions were taken seriously.
The controversy started when David Hardik hit Pandya for a powerful six in the 18th over of RCB’s innings. The force of the impact changed the shape of the ball and, combined with the humidity, prompted the umpires to call for a substitute player. When a box of used balls was brought out, David picked one up and began to examine it carefully, rolling it in his hands and checking the seam.
Despite repeated instructions from on-field umpires Virender Sharma and Swaroopan and Kannur to hand the ball over, David continued to hold the ball for a few seconds. This clearly frustrated the officials and delayed the game momentarily. A similar situation happened again on the 20th of the month and made the matter even more tense.
The IPL further clarified the exact nature of the breach, “The first incident happened when the umpires changed the ball during the 18th over (17.2) of RCB’s innings. He asked to look at the ball and did not hand it over despite repeated requests,” IPL said in a statement.
He then added that “The second incident occurred in the 20th game (19.2) when he again failed to hand the ball over to the umpires, which again amounted to failure to follow the instructions or directives of the umpires.” release added.
David admitted his mistake and accepted the penalty given by the match referee. As per the IPL rules, the run score will remain on his record for the next 24 months. Although this was only his first offense of the season, repeat offenses can lead to harsher consequences, including a fine.
Hardik Pandya was also fined in the RCB high-scoring encounter
Tim David was not the only player to be suspended after the match. MI captain Hardik Pandya was fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over during RCB’s innings which went beyond the time allowed.
Confirming the sanction, the IPL said that “He was fined Rs 12 lakh as this was his team’s first offense of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct.” IPL said.
While these disciplinary actions attracted attention, they somewhat overshadowed the fun and high-scoring competition. Batting first, RCB posted a massive total of 240/4, one of the highest scores of IPL 2026 so far. Phil Salt Virat Kohli led the charge with 78 while adding a steady 50. Captain Rajat Patidar contributed a quick-fire 53, ensuring RCB maintained control throughout the innings.
David also played a valuable role with the bat despite the controversy. He remained unbeaten on 34 off just 16 balls to complete an already dominant total.
In response, MI fought hard but missed the target. Sherfane Rutherford was the pick of the bunch with an impressive unbeaten 71, keeping MI in the contest until the final. However, the rate required proved too steep and MI finished on 222/5 to give RCB an 18-run victory.
