Benn says experience and personal challenges changed his mindset before his fight with Regis Prograis
Conor Benn has said he is no longer driven by anger in his fight against Regis Prograis, signaling a change in mindset after recent years in and out of the ring. The welterweight bout takes place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, with Benn returning to his natural weight.
Reflecting on how he approached earlier fights, Benn said he carried frustration into the ring and fought with something to prove. He described that version of himself as different from where he is now.
“I was angry. I had that chip on my shoulder. I’m not that guy anymore,” Benn said during the final press conference on Thursday.
He said the shift came through experience and personal challenges, adding that he now enters fights with a clearer mindset. Benn pointed to changes in both his approach and preparation as part of that process. He added that dealing with setbacks outside the ring played a role in how he now handles pressure.
“It comes with age. It comes with experience. You become a better fighter,” Benn said.
Benn also said his focus is now on performance rather than proving people wrong, describing his goal as delivering consistent results rather than reacting emotionally. He added that the return to welterweight should allow him to show a more complete version of his style, both physically and mentally.
Prograis steps in as the more experienced opponent, a former two-time world champion who has competed at the highest level. The fight represents a step up for Benn, who is looking to position himself for a title shot with a win and solidify his position in the division.
Benn said his priority is to deal with the task in front of him before looking ahead to bigger fights.
Saturday will show how that change in mindset translates once the fight begins.
