Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) like them, they failed miserably IPL 2026 campaign had begun to gather rhythm. The star Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga was ruled out of the entire tournament, leaving a glaring void in the team’s bowling combination. The update was confirmed by the franchise’s director of cricket, Tom Moody, during the LSG clash. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens. With little time left to dwell on the loss, the management has already begun the search for a replacement and is expected to finalize the name in the next 24-48 hours.
Wanindu Hasaranga’s injury forces a sudden rethink for LSG
The 28-year-old Hasaranga was bought for INR 2 crore in the mini-auction and was expected to play a key role this season. However, his campaign came to an abrupt halt after tearing his left hamstring during Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup opener in February. Things got tougher as he failed to meet the mandatory fitness requirements imposed by Sri Lanka Cricket. As per the rules, centrally contracted players have to pass these tests to get a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for foreign leagues like the IPL, effectively closing the door on his participation this season.
For LSG, it’s not just losing a bowler, it’s losing a player who offers balance. Hasaranga’s ability to break partnerships with his leg spin, coupled with his lower-order batting, made him a valuable asset in both departments. His absence forces the team to rethink its strategy in the middle of a competitive tournament.
The South African all-rounder will replace Hasaranga
In response, LSG quickly turned to the Registered Existing Player Pool (RAPP) to bridge the gap. According to ESPNcricinfo, the South African all-rounder George Linde He emerged as the main candidate to replace Hasaranga. Although he does not yet carry the same profile in the IPL, Linde brings with him a wealth of T20 experience from leagues around the world.

In 250 T20 matches, he picked up 218 wickets at an economy rate of 7.42, while contributing 2,746 runs at an impressive strike rate of 136.68. His all-round ability makes him a similar option in terms of team balance, even if his style differs from Hasaranga’s leg-spinning approach. Linde has played in competitions such as SA20, The Hundred, Major League Cricket (MLC) and Pakistan Super League (PSL) and has also been part of the South African team. T20 World Cup 2026.
Despite the setback, LSG showed encouraging resilience on the field. After losing their first game, the team bounced back with back-to-back wins and are currently fifth in the points table. Led by experienced pacer Mohammad Shami and emerging talent Prince Yadav, the bowling attack held firm. Meanwhile, spinners Digvesh Rathi and M Siddharth have stepped up to ensure the team doesn’t feel the absence too much.
Linden’s potential inclusion could add new depth and flexibility to the squad as they prepare for their next match against Gujarat Titans (GT).
