Aleix Espargaro is heading home after a ‘very serious’ crash during Honda MotoGP testing in Malaysia. Espargaro narrowly avoided a spinal cord injury in the crash.

Along with Takaki Nakagami, Espargaro has been testing Honda’s 850cc MotoGP bike at the Sepang circuit this week. He suffered four broken vertebrae in the accident on Tuesday.

Espargaro will retire from full-time racing at the end of the 2024 season and move from Aprilia to Honda. He appeared as a wild card/substitute rider in five races last season, taking his total number of starts to 260.

Alex Espargaro’s Instagram post after the Honda test crash

“I had a very serious accident in the test at Sepang on Tuesday, which resulted in many bruises and four broken vertebrae, although with a very small difference, and thankfully, they did not affect the vertebrae.

“After a few days at CU Aurelius Hospital, I was treated wonderfully, I was able to fly home with Laura, who now came to the rescue from the other side of the world (again, and I lost count…) and there we will assess the need for surgery at Quiron Dexeus.

“Thanks to my entire Honda team for taking care of me these past few days. Sorry for the scare, I’ll be back!”
