One of the most popular words in modern golf instruction is “ground reaction forceswhich refers to how your feet interact with the ground when you swing. And if you want to swing with maximum efficiency, it’s important to learn how to properly apply these forces to your swing.
If you watch the best golfers in the world take a swing, you’ll notice that they shift the pressure to their feet as they go through the motion. This not only helps them generate more energy, but also improves their ranking. This pressure difference is essential to learn if you want to become an elite ball striker.
Top 100 GOLF instructor James Leitz likes to teach this pressure difference by having his students hold a kettlebell in front of them in their golf stance. He then uses a metronome set to about 150 beats per minute and has them move the drum bell back and forth on each click. As you do this, the momentum of the kettlebell should shift the pressure back and forth between your legs.

“You want to feel your feet bouncing on the kettlebell,” says Leitz. “We need to create a fast pace and this is a great way to do it.”
As you continue to rock the kettlebell back and forth, you can start to lift your heels off the ground a bit to get a real feel for how your weight and pressure is shifting between your feet.
Once you’ve tamed that feeling, swap the kettle bell for one of your irons (a medium or short iron will work). Continue that “dance” with your feet and then eventually, graduate to a full follow through.
“It really unlocks a golfer’s athleticism,” says Leitz. “It’s a great drill to teach you that the swing starts before the club moves.”
If you can incorporate the feel of the kettlebell dance into your full swing, you’ll be able to use the ground better and make sharper shots than ever before.
