Ted Scott knows a thing or two about scouting the best players in the world. Scott was on the bag for both of Bubba Watson’s Masters victories and he has already won two more with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, with whom Scott has teamed to win 19 times on Tour since they joined forces in the fall of 2021.
In January, we visited Scott in his hometown of Louisiana to talk about his journey in life and caddying, but also picked up some tips along the way—like his five secrets to becoming a good caddy. You can check them out below.

Ted Scott’s 5 keys to being a good corpse
1. “Make sure you keep your player driving – wash his underwear, get his clothes, get his supplies, do whatever you need to do to lighten his load so he can keep his eyes on the prize.”
2. “Get around the best teams, coaches and players. Get around the best people. That’s how you get better at caddy.”
3. “Forget what happened on the last hole. Misread one putt? He’s going to ask you to read the next one and you have to be safe. It’s better to keep making mistakes and learn from it than to be all over the map. It’s hard to learn when you’re constantly changing your theory, so being a tribute – as a caddy or a player – is a big thing.”
4. “This is probably the hardest one, but don’t take it personally. Being a great person means absorbing negative behaviors that are directed at you, but not meant for you. These guys are under tremendous stress and will say or mention nasty things about you. It’s easy to take it personally, but don’t—you’re the closest warm body.”
5. “This is the most important thing: find a great player. What makes a great caddy? A great player. Write that down, kid.”
