Peter Malnati started Thursday well Black Desert Championship in Ivins, Utah. The PGA Tour veteran birdied the par-3 third to get within one, but he ran into trouble on the 4th hole.

The Black Desert Resort course was the last from the architect Tom Weiskopfand the course goes through a lava field. Like many desert courses, this means there are plenty of unplayable areas and out-of-bounds penalties.

On the 4th hole, a 477-yard par-4, Malnati found one of those OB spots when he blocked his tee shot right. He was forced to re-tee, but then he did it again – this time missing out of bounds.

Still on the tee and playing his fifth shot, he hit it 299 yards down the fairway and then had 177 left for his approach. So naturally he set her up for a double whammy.

The ball landed to the right of the green, but picked up the slope and rolled hard left toward the hole. Speeded up and tapped off the pin and dropped into the cup for a double 6 – which was also a nice break as the pin stopped the ball rolling 10 feet from the hole.

After the hole, a subdued Malnati muttered, “golf is stuck,” before breaking into a smile. “Golf is so bad.”

He elaborated as his playing partners congratulated him.

“This is the dumbest … beautiful duo!” he said.

Malnati shot a two-over 73 and will need to shoot a sub-par round on Friday to make the cut. He begins his second round at 8:29 a.m. ET on Friday. You can watch it in full Round 2 time hereand move tournament leaderboard here.
