Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on appointing Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach, with negotiations now at an advanced stage. Sources indicate that discussions have been constructive and are close to a full deal, with the Italian ready to step in immediately despite previously favoring a summer move.
The club are pushing to end the terms quickly, offering the 46-year-old a long-term deal. De Zerbi has been single since he left Marseille in February, allowing him an immediate return to management as Spurs look to stabilize their season.
This urgency reflects Tottenham’s current struggles, with the team 17th in the Premier League and just one point above the relegation zone. Their run without a win in a league game throughout 2026 has increased the pressure on the club’s management to find a permanent solution.
Managerial instability and fan concerns
The search for a new manager follows the departure of interim boss Igor Tudor, who left by mutual consent after just 44 days in charge. The decision came after the 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, although the club delayed action out of respect for Tudor following the recent death of his father.
The responsibility for appointing the next manager now rests with chief executive Vinai Venkatesham and sporting director Johan Lange, who are leading the process during a critical period for the club.
Despite progress in talks with De Zerbi, not all supporters are convinced. Several fan groups have expressed concern over his past comments about Mason Greenwood. During their time together at Marseille, De Zerbi publicly defended the striker, describing him as a “good boy” who had suffered significant consequences. This stance has drawn criticism, particularly from Proud Lilywhites, Tottenham’s official LGBTQ+ supporters’ group, who believe the comments have wider implications.
Alternative options remain under consideration
While De Zerbi appears to be the main candidate, Tottenham have explored other possibilities. Former Nottingham Forest manager Sean Dyche has been mooted as a short-term option due to his reputation for guiding teams away from relegation. However, his preference for a contract of at least 18 months could complicate any deal.
Mauricio Pochettino is another name favored by many fans given his previous success at the club, but his current commitment to the United States national team ahead of the upcoming World Cup makes an immediate return unlikely.
Several figures linked to Tottenham, such as Ryan Mason, Harry Redknapp and Tim Sherwood, are said to be willing to step in on an interim basis. Current player Ben Davies has also been mentioned as a temporary solution, along with former players Glenn Hoddle and Chris Hughton.
Adi Hutter had also been linked but has effectively ruled himself out, reiterating that he does not plan to resume training until at least the start of next season.
