The timing matters. That win pushed Adames into a stronger position at 160, but it didn’t settle questions about how he stacks up against the other names around both divisions.
Answers quickly turned into a call of detractors. Fans pointed to Canelo Alvarez, Janibek Alimkhanuly, Christian Mbilli and Osleys Iglesias as immediate checks on that claim. Some called for a Sheeraz rematch instead, arguing the first fight didn’t close the door.
Adames certainly talks a big game for someone who hasn’t cleaned up his own backyard. The “Ammo” Williams win was solid, but it didn’t answer the questions fans actually have about him.
At 160, the skepticism is loud because he takes down guys like Yoenli Hernandez. Hernandez is a big deal. Undefeated, highly ranked by the WBA and WBC, and looking like a real threat. For Adames to say “he’s not on my level” sounds more like a strategic exit than actual confidence.
Then there is Erislandy Lara. Even at his age, Lara is a master technician. The fact that they share a trainer (Ismael Salas) is the usual boxing excuse for that fight not happening, but it leaves Adames in a spot where he’s holding a belt without actually proving he’s the best in the weight class.
If he thinks 160 is a challenge, 168 is filled with tough opposition. Jumping up to face the top names is a big risk. Osleys Iglesias & Christian Mbilli. They are natural, heavy-handed super middleweights who thrive on the kind of pressure Adames likes to use.
Then there’s Lester Martinez. He only fought Mbilli to a draw (with many thinking he won), proving he is a legitimate elite threat at 168. Diego Pacheco & Canelo Alvarez are the elite of the elite. Pacheco has the height and reach to keep Adames at bay, and Canelo is Canelo.
Adames is in a “prove it” phase. Bragging about clearing two divisions when you didn’t fight Yoenli or Janibek, and when you just went the distance with a guy who knocked out Sheeraz, is why the fans are skeptical. Adames has the tools, but until he stops firing the top fighter and actually signs the contract, it’s just talk.
