It was not a dispute that got away from either side late. The IBF had already made its position clear in advance, rejecting the bout and returning sanction fees before fight night. Opetaia’s team moved forward anyway, knowing the likely outcome, and that’s the part that defines this situation more than the result itself.
Jai won the fight against Brandon Glanton and retained his Ring Championship, but the IBF title was always at stake. That trade has now happened twice. The first came in 2023 when he lost the belt after another unsanctioned fight, only to regain it once he returned to the IBF’s structure. This time there is no immediate sign that he intends to retrace the same route.
The involvement of Zuffa Boxing pushed the situation further. The IBF was willing to consider the fight only if the additional belt was treated as secondary, but once it became clear that the promotion intended to offer his title as a grand prize, the position hardened. This is where the lines are drawn.
Opetaia is still talking about becoming undisputed cruiserweight champion, targeting the other belt holders in the division. The difficulty is that undisputed status still runs through the same sanctioning bodies from which he has now stepped outside, and there is no alternative route that carries the same recognition.
Nothing about this outcome is unclear. A champion chose to operate outside the structure governing his title, and the governing body applied its rules.
The IBF loses an undefeated belt holder, but it maintains the one thing it has always sold, consistency. It has long been the most rigid of the four major sanctioning bodies, and this decision follows the same pattern as before. There are no exceptions, even for a champion at the top of the division.
Opetaia, on the other hand, is betting that larger platforms and different titles can be treated in the same way. That bet flies in the face of how the sport still recognizes champions, and there’s no sign yet that the system is ready to adjust. One side does not move, and neither does the other.
