Robinio Vaz became the hero for AS Roma, securing a narrow but vital 1-0 win over Lecce at the Estadio Olimpico.
The Giallorossi consolidated their position in the top half of Serie A, battling against a resilient Lecce who were fighting hard against relegation. Roma, sixth with 51 points, tried to keep their European qualification hopes alive. Meanwhile, 18th-placed Lecce with 27 points were in desperate need of points to climb out of the relegation zone.
In the first half, AS Roma dominated possession, dictating the game with 67% of the ball. However, they struggled to break down Lecce’s disciplined defence. Despite their territorial advantage, clear chances remained elusive for the locals.
Lecce stayed compact, absorbing the pressure and looking for opportunities on the counter. Their defensive solidity ensured a scoreless first 45 minutes, frustrating the home crowd.
The two coaches made tactical adjustments at halftime. Roma introduced D. Ghilardi for Gianluca Mancini in central defense. The Roma manager quickly made more changes as the second half began.
The second half brought more urgency from the locals. Just six minutes after the restart, Roma made a major substitution, bringing on Robinio Vaz for Neil El Aynaoui in the 51st minute. This change proved decisive.
Vaz made an immediate impact, finding the net in the 57th minute. The substitute striker guided home a clinical finish. Mario Hermoso did an excellent job and a precise pass, which made OlÃmpico excited.
With a goal conceded, Lecce responded with a flurry of substitutions, bringing on N. Stulic and O. Gandelman in the 61st minute, followed by L. Banda in the 67th minute, with the aim of providing fresh offensive impetus. Roma countered these changes with substitutions of their own, with K. Tsimikas and D. Malen in the 75th minute to bolster their lines.
The game has been growing in the final stages, marked by a series of yellow cards. Angeliño, who had arrived for Roma, received a booking in the 77th minute. Lecce’s Santiago Pierotti followed suit in the 81st minute. Roma’s N. Pisilli in the 89th minute and Lecce’s D. Veiga in the 90th minute received further bookings. This reflected the high stakes of the game and the growing tension.
Despite Roma’s dominance in possession (67%), Lecce exceeded the expected goals (xG) metric, with 1.08 xG. Roma recorded 0.84 xG. The visitors also had more shots on goal (3 to 2) than fewer total shots (8 to 14). This highlighted their effectiveness in attack, although they were unable to convert their chances.
The hard-fought victory sees AS Roma consolidate sixth place, keeping their European aspirations alive. For Lecce, defeat means they remain mired in the relegation zone, facing an uphill battle to secure their Serie A status for next season.
