Monaco staged a superb comeback, overcoming an early deficit to defeat Lyon 2-1, with Maghnes Akliouche and Folarin Balogun securing crucial points away from home.
Monaco produced an impressive second-half turnaround against Lyon at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais. They overcame an early deficit to secure a vital 2-1 win in Ligue 1 on 22 March 2026.
This matchup was a battle for European qualification. Monaco arrived in good form, having won their last five league games. Lyon, sitting fourth, was looking to consolidate its position after a mixed race.
In the first half there was a strong exchange between the two sides. Monaco’s Aleksandr Golovin received a yellow card in the 40th minute for a hard challenge.
However, Lyon broke the deadlock just two minutes later. Pavel Sulc headed home with a pinpoint finish from an Endrick assist in the 42nd minute, sending the home crowd wild.

The comeback was completed ten minutes later. Folarin Balogun converted a penalty in the 72nd minute after a foul in the box, putting Monaco ahead. Lyon’s Paulo Fonseca also saw yellow for the protests.
Lyon’s hopes were further dashed in the 89th minute when Nicolás Tagliafico was shown a straight red card for a serious foul. Monaco held firm, managing the game effectively until the final whistle.
Despite Lyon’s 57% possession, Monaco created superior chances. Their Expected Goals (xG) of 2.21 was significantly higher than Lyon’s 1.09, reflecting their attacking threat.
Monaco registered 16 shots in total, with six on target, beating Lyon’s 15 shots and four on target. Maghnes Akliouche was rated 9.5 for his match-winning performance.
