Showing he can control a full fight without needing a finish, Omari Jones (6-0) handed Christian Alan Gómez Durán (23-7-1) a one-sided eight-round decision on Saturday night at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida.
The scores told the story clearly. All three judges had it 80-72, giving Jones every round in his first scheduled eight-round bout as a professional. The hometown prospect kept the fight on pace from the opening bell, never letting the veteran get a foothold.
2024 Olympic bronze medalist Omari worked behind his jab and faster hands from the start, keeping Gomez at bay and taking rounds without much resistance. Gomez tried to come forward at times, but he couldn’t land clean or keep Jones in place long enough to change anything.
There was no knockdown, but the rounds were clear. Jones, 23, was first and last in most exchanges, while Gomez spent long periods trying to get close without success.
Gomez continued to push forward on points, but Omari stayed in control, using the jab and short punches to prevent him from being pinned. The pattern did not change, and the rounds continued in the same manner.
The match was Jones’ first time going the distance as a pro, and he handled it without a drop in output or focus. Instead of chasing a stoppage, he stayed disciplined and finished each round on his terms.
Fighting in his hometown on the undercard of Carlos Adames against Austin Williams, Jones delivered a clear step forward performance against a more experienced opponent. The result keeps his record clean while showing he can handle laps, pace and control against a durable opponent who wasn’t there to fall early.
