Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) faced an early challenge ahead IPL 2026with their high-level signatures Matheesha Pathirana unlikely to feature in opening matches. The Sri Lankan pacer, bought for a massive ₹18 crore, is still recovering from a calf strain and is expected to return only in mid-April.
This means that KKR will have to start their campaign without one of their most exciting bowling arms. The team opens its season against Mumbai Indians (MI) on March 29, followed by crucial matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) – all matches that Pathirana will miss.

Head coach Abhishek Nayar He confirmed the renewal during his preseason press conference, giving fans a clearer picture of the pacer’s recovery timeline.
“The latest update we know is that he is on the Sri Lankan cricket board and they have been rehabilitating him. And our latest communication is hopefully mid-April when they feel he will be fit. That’s what we know now,” Nayar said.
Pathirana’s absence stems from an injury sustained during the T20 World Cup 2026, which forced him to quit midway through the tournament. Since then, he has been undergoing rehabilitation under the supervision of Sri Lanka Cricket.
Interestingly, Sri Lanka Cricket has already cleared him to participate in the IPL, with secretary Bandula Dissanayake stating that the pacer has completed his rehabilitation. However, KKR seem keen to take a cautious approach, ensuring that he is fully fit for the match before bringing him back into the playing XI.
Bowling concerns deepen as KKR look for solutions
While Pathirana’s delayed return is a concern, KKR’s bowling worries don’t end there. The team is also set to miss young Indian Harshit Rana, who has been a key part of their set-up in recent seasons. Rana suffered a knee injury during the T20 World Cup warm-up and is likely to miss most, if not all, of IPL 2026.

Nayar admitted how big a setback it was for the team.
“Firstly, it’s a big blow because Harshit has been an integral part of this team for the last few seasons, including the championship season. He’s grown a lot as a cricketer over the years, so it’s not easy to replace him.” he admitted.
With two crucial pacers unavailable, KKR are now actively exploring their options. The team management along with the leadership team are evaluating local bowlers who can step up and fill the gap.
“Over the last few days, we’ve looked at several pitchers. With the help of the management team, we’re trying to evaluate who fits and who can best fill that role. We’re still evaluating that and haven’t made that decision yet,” Nayar added.
Meanwhile, KKR have already made an adjustment by bringing in the Zimbabwean fast bowler Blessed Muzarabani as a substitute for Mustafizur Rahman. While this adds some depth, the absence of proven performers like Pathirana and Rana will still be felt.
The focus will be on managing this transition effectively as the three-time champions prepare to start the season. If they can stay competitive in the early games, Pathirana’s expected return in mid-April could provide the spark they need to build momentum.
For now, though, KKR will have to rely on their existing resources and hope that their revamped bowling attack delivers.
