Whittaker returns on April 18 as fans question opposition

Matchroom has added Ben Whittaker to the April 18 card in Liverpool, where Callum Smith takes on David Morrell at the M&S Bank Arena. The undefeated 2020 Olympic silver medalist will return on the undercard as part of a show that already has world-class significance in light heavyweight.

The move gets Whittaker active again, but it doesn’t answer the bigger question of where his career is going. Currently, Matchroom seems more like keeping him visible on a big platform than pushing him into a meaningful step. Whittaker (10-0-1, 7 KOs) remains undefeated, but his record still lacks the kind of opponents that put a fighter in the serious end of the division.

His last fight was a first-round knockout of Benjamin Gavazi in November. It was a quick finish, but the opponent was not at a level that tested him or moved forward in any way. It added to a pattern that has followed him since he turned pro, where the performances look sharp but the opposition doesn’t match the attention he gets.

Fan interest will focus heavily on who Whittaker is matched up against on the April 18th card, as that is where the real conversation is right now. He’s four years into his pro career, creeping up on 30, and still hasn’t been slotted with a top 15 ranked light heavyweight, which is starting to annoy fans and wake people up to how he’s being moved. Many see this as a warning sign that he is being built to look like a star rather than prove it the hard way against quality opposition, so this next opponent will attract more attention than the result itself.

This makes this return more important than it might seem on paper. Whittaker has the amateur pedigree and the background, but time moves on, and the division doesn’t wait. Fighters like Morrell, who is younger, have been taking on tougher fights and moving closer to the top. If Whittaker is going to be taken seriously at that level, the matchups need to start reflecting that.
