Abdullah Mason refuses timeline as Keyshawn seeks fight

Mason has gotten a lot of attention lately with the way he fights at 135. Fans are starting to notice him more, and it doesn’t come from talking. It comes from what he does in the ring. Mason’s style is a fan magnet. He has the same effect that Gennadiy Golovkin had early on, drawing people in with the way he fights and the type of fights he brings.

Keyshawn was the young man who received most of that attention. Now there’s someone else right there with him, and you could see it in how hard he pushed to make the fight on the spot.

“I want to fight you this year,” Keyshawn said as he stood in front of Mason. “Can we make it happen this year?”

WBO lightweight champion Mason remained calm, not raising his voice and not getting into the tone of the exchange. He’s made it clear he’s open to the fight, but the timing has to make sense with what he’s doing at 135.

Keyshawn kept trying to move it forward in real time. At one point, he called Mason’s side during the altercation and pressed for a yes or no answer while still standing in front of him, trying to force a decision on the spot.

“I’m pulling teeth to get him to fight me,” Keyshawn said as the altercation continued.

Mason didn’t give it to him. He didn’t close the door, but he also didn’t step into the timeline and keep everything where it is rather than having it set in that moment.

Both fighters said they would take the fight. That was not the issue. The question is when it happens and who should decide it.

Keyshawn spoke like someone trying to lock in his next move. Mason handled it like someone who doesn’t need to rush into one. That difference carried the exchange, and it’s still there now.
