Delhi Capitals (DC) KL has finally got clarity when it comes to Rahul’s role IPL 2026 – and it could be the reset both player and franchise need.
KL Rahul is gearing up for a new role in IPL 2026
After a season full of experimentation and changing roles, the think tank has reportedly decided to go back to basics: Rahul will open the innings and handle wicketkeeping duties.
This is both a sensible and overdue move. Rahul had his most successful IPL seasons as an opener where he was consistent in both pace and consistency. By giving him a stable role at the top, DC aims to bring much-needed stability to a batting order that looked uncertain at times last year.
Rahul’s role in IPL 2025 was not stable. After being signed for a whopping ₹ 14 crore, he was often pushed into the middle order and was 4th in several matches. While he still managed to emerge as DC’s top run-scorer – with 539 runs in 13 matches at an average of close to 54 and a strike rate of 149.72 – the constant turmoil didn’t quite allow him to settle into a rhythm.
The turning point came at the end of the season. With the team struggling to find reliable openers, Rahul again stepped up to the plate and the impact was immediate. His unbeaten 112 off 65 balls against Gujarat Titans was a reminder of what a team can do when given clarity and responsibility, even if they fail to get over the line that day.
Now, with IPL 2026 around the corner, Delhi Capitals seem determined not to repeat the same mistake. Along with opening the batting, Rahul will also be expected to keep wickets – a role he has already handled for India in ODIs. This dual responsibility could place him even more central to the team’s plans, both tactically and as a senior figure in the squad.
DC is aiming for bigger goals in IPL 2026
The decision to lock down Rahul’s role also comes amid growing controversy over how he was used last season. Former Indian cricketers have made it clear that the uncertainty surrounding the batting position can backfire both him and the team.
Subramaniam Badrinath He did not say anything when he touched on the issue. “Every year the batting order is their puzzle, especially where KL Rahul has to bat. I believe KL Rahul wants to open the batting. But on the other hand, the team management wants him to bat in the middle order.” Badrinath said on his YouTube channel. “It seems to be an ongoing conflict. They definitely need to resolve this issue. It is not clear if KL Rahul is happy in DC.”
His comments reflect a wider sentiment – clarity of roles is important, especially for a player of Rahul’s calibre. Constant adjustments can disrupt the rhythm and make all the difference in a fast-paced format like T20 cricket.

Echoing similar sentiments, Mohammad Kaif strongly backed Rahul to stick to the opening duties. “I think he will open and he should only open. He has an incredible record as an opener. If we talk about the last three to four years, his chart, as far as strike rate is concerned, has gone up a lot. I don’t think there should be any confusion,” Kaif said on his YouTube channel.
With Rahul now sitting at the top, Delhi’s batting line-up suddenly looks more balanced. The middle order has plenty of firepower with the likes of David Miller, Tristan Stubbs and Nitish Rana, allowing Rahul the freedom to anchor or pace depending on the situation.
Apart from the franchise, this season could also be crucial for Rahul personally. Absent from India’s T20I setup since the 2022 T20 World Cup, IPL 2026 presents a golden opportunity to make a strong case for a comeback. A consistent run as an opener – where he is most comfortable – could get him back into the national team.
Delhi Capitals will begin their campaign against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 1 and all eyes will be on how this newfound clarity will translate on the field.
