The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 The tournament is heading for one of its most uncertain starts yet as serious concerns surfaced just days before its March 26 kick-off. What was supposed to be a celebration of cricket has now been overshadowed by heightened geopolitical tensions, especially after a deadly airstrike in Kabul.
Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan increased after the Kabul airstrike
The situation escalated sharply on the night of March 16 when Pakistan carried out “precision airstrikes” as part of Operation Ghazab Lil Haq. According to Pakistani authorities, the strikes targeted the infrastructure of militants linked to attacks on civilians in Kabul and Nangarhar.
However, Afghan officials have strongly disputed this narrative. They claim that the strikes hit a major civilian facility – the Omid Addiction Treatment Hospital in Kabul. According to reports, the 2,000-bed hospital was completely destroyed. Officials said that more than 400 people died and about 250 people were injured as a result of the incident.
While Pakistan has denied targeting any civilian structures, the scale of the reported casualties has sparked international concern and significantly raised security concerns for foreign players.
The Australian contingent is in a tough spot ahead of PSL 2026
Despite the tense situation, a total of 17 Australian cricketers and coaches are currently signed to multiple PSL franchises. Their participation is now highly dependent on evolving security conditions and government recommendations.
The uncertainty is particularly effective because many of these players are key figures in their respective teams, including world-renowned names and experienced coaches.
One of the biggest concerns surrounds the March 28 match between Peshawar Zalmi and Rawalpindi Pindiz. The match, which was scheduled to be played at the Imran Khan Cricket Stadium in Peshawar, is now in serious doubt after the city was marked as a “do not travel” zone by the Australian authorities.
