Oviedo goalkeeper Aarón Escandell scored a crucial away goal against Espanyol in a 1-1 La Liga draw.
Espanyol, seventh in the league, were looking to boost their European qualification hopes. Visiting Oviedo, languishing at the bottom in 20th place, desperately needed points to avoid relegation. Both teams came into the match with poor recent form, which added pressure to this match.
The visitors stunned the RCDE Stadium crowd by taking an early lead. In the eighth minute, Alberto Reina finished clinically from inside the area. T. Fernandez made a precise assist, catching the home defense off guard.
Quickly, Espanyol looked for an answer, pushing forward the numbers. However, their intensity sometimes led to fouls, with C. Ngonge picking up a yellow card in the 12th minute for a trip.
The pressure from the home team ended up paying off. Kike GarcÃa leveled the scores in the 36th minute. Ngonge, making up for his earlier card, provided an assist for Garcia to guide home, sending the teams into the break tied.
At the break, Espanyol needed to find a way to break Oviedo’s determination. The visitors, for their part, tried to maintain their defensive form and frustrate the rivals, looking for opportunities to counterattack.
In the second half, Espanyol made a triple substitution in the 56th minute. T. Fernandez, L. Ilic and N. Fonseca entered the fray and injected fresh energy into the attack. This tactical change showed Espanyol’s intention to find a winner.
Oviedo responded with defensive determination and led to a flurry of yellow cards. S. Colombatto (Oviedo) was booked in the 61st minute, followed by P. Lozano (Espanyol) a minute later. Oviedo also introduced Pere Milla for Ngonge in the 62nd, strengthening their midfield.
Despite Espanyol’s relentless attack, Oviedo’s defence, led by their outstanding goalkeeper Escandell, remained firm. Escandell made several key saves, denying Espanyol any clear path to a second goal. More yellow cards for R. Fernández Jaén (Espanyol) in the 75th and J. López (Oviedo) in the 83rd reflected the growing tension in the match.
Espanyol dominated the statistical battle but did not get the victory. They recorded an expected goals (xG) of 1.82 against Oviedo’s 0.87. The home team fired 28 shots, with 9 on target, with 58% possession. Oviedo only had 6 shots in total, with 3 on target, but Escandell’s 8 saves were crucial.
This tie represents a vital visit point for Real Oviedo in their fight against relegation. For Espanyol, dropping points at home against a struggling team is a frustrating blow, which could damage their European qualification ambitions.
