India’s 96th win over New Zealand ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Final Held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the competition will be remembered not only for the team’s historic third title but also for the remarkable individual performances that defined the tournament. Several players had memorable moments throughout the competition and the awards list reflected just how impressive those performances were.
A stunning save by Sanju Samson
One of the biggest stories of the tournament involved Indian wicketkeeper Sanju Samson, who was named the Player of the Tournament. His campaign became a dramatic redemption arc that captured the imagination of cricket fans around the world.
Samson wasn’t always a guaranteed choice in the league XI early in his career, but when his moment came in this tournament, he made it count in spectacular fashion. In just five innings, the 31-year-old amassed 321 runs at an incredible average of 80.25 and hit the ball at a strike rate of nearly 200.
His performances became even more important in the stages where he won three matches in a row. Samson scored an unbeaten 97 off 50 balls against West Indies in the Super 8 stage, followed it up with 89 off 46 balls in the semi-final against England and then repeated the same score in the final against New Zealand – 89 off 46 deliveries.
With his 321 runs, Samson also surpassed Virat Kohli’s record of 319 runs for the most runs by an Indian batsman in a T20 World Cup edition. He was equally devastating with the bat, smashing a tournament record 24 sixes and setting a new benchmark for power hitting in the competition.
Jasprit Bumrah’s winning spell in the final
Although Samson dominated with the bat throughout the tournament, the final belonged to India’s pace leader Jasprit Bumrah. The fast bowler delivered a clinical spell that dismantled New Zealand’s chase and effectively sealed India’s victory.
Bumrah finished with figures of 4 for 15 in four overs – his best bowling performance in T20 internationals – and was deservedly named Man of the Match in the final.
Speaking after receiving the award, Bumrah admitted that this moment was very emotional for him. He said winning the final on home soil made the achievement even more special, especially after a disappointing grand final there earlier. He also explained that he went into the game with a clear plan and strong motivation to deliver his team.
A historic win for the Indian team
India’s title win was of great historical significance. With wins in 2007, 2024 and now 2026, the Men in Blue became the first team to win the T20 Men’s World Cup three times. They also became the first party successfully defended his title.
The win made India the first host nation to win the Men’s T20 World Cup and marked their third consecutive ICC trophy after the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Showcasing both team success and individual brilliance, the 2026 T20 World Cup will go down as one of the most memorable chapters in Indian cricket history.
