Rayo Vallecano cruised to a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Oviedo, with Jorge de Frutos’ brace leading the way.
Rayo Vallecano produced a dominant performance at home, defeating Oviedo 3-0 in La Liga. Jorge de Frutos was the star, with two goals to put his team on the way to a crucial victory.
Heading into the match, Rayo Vallecano, sitting 15th, looked to gain momentum and move away from the relegation battle. Meanwhile, Oviedo arrived at the Vallecas Football Stadium desperate for points to start their fight for survival.
The game started with Rayo Vallecano establishing control, showing their intent early on. They pressed high and created several half chances, putting Oviedo’s defense under immediate pressure.
Oviedo’s defensive effort was put to the test, with a yellow card for K. Sibo in the 35th minute for a foul. This highlighted the growing pressure from the home side.
Just before the break, Rayo’s persistence paid off. Jorge de Frutos broke the tie in the 44th minute, firing a shot past the Oviedo goalkeeper after a well-worked move.
Oviedo made a double substitution at half-time, entering S. Cazorla and I. Chaira, looking for a spark to turn the tide. Rayo Vallecano, however, wanted to maintain its intensity and secure the advantage.
The second half has started with a blow for Rayo Vallecano. Just five minutes after the restart, Jorge de Frutos converted a penalty in the 50th minute, calmly scoring to double his tally and Rayo’s lead.
Oviedo’s frustrations became apparent. A. Reina received a yellow card in the 53rd minute for an elbow, adding to his problems. The visitors struggled to assert themselves despite the early substitutions.
Rayo then sealed their overall victory. In the 62nd minute, Álvaro García extended the score to 3-0, guiding the ball into the net with a clinical finish from inside the area. This third goal left the result beyond doubt.
Both managers made further changes as the game entered its final stages. Rayo substituted double-scorer Frutos in the 65th minute as Oviedo desperately looked for a consolation, but their efforts were thwarted by a resolute Rayo defence.
The stats reflect Rayo Vallecano’s dominance, with an expected goal (xG) of 2.45 compared to Oviedo’s 0.99. Rayo registered a total of 19 shots with 7 on target, while Oviedo managed just 8 shots with 2 on target, illustrating the difference in attacking quality.
This emphatic 3-0 win gives Rayo Vallecano a crucial boost, which takes them up the La Liga table. For Oviedo, the defeat deepens their relegation worries, leaving them bottom of the table with little hope of improvement in their fight for survival.
