William Zepeda vs Lamont Roach ordered for WBC title

Zepeda enters the featured matchup as one of the division’s most active contenders. The Mexican southpaw has built a reputation for consistent pressure, body punching and a high punch output that has made him a tough assignment for opponents. Those performances have kept him near the top of the WBC rankings as the lightweight title situation has changed in recent months.

Roach arrives after a string of high-profile fights against lightweights. The Washington, DC-born Roach fought to two twelve-round draws, including a close encounter with Gervonta Davis. He also challenged Shakur Stevenson for the WBC lightweight title last July in Queens, New York, losing a unanimous decision after twelve rounds in a fight that placed him among the division’s regular title challengers.

Even without a win in those recent appearances, Roach is now in line for another opportunity if the fight with Zepeda is settled.

The reported bout drew attention because interim champion Jadier Herrera was widely considered a leading candidate to fight for the vacant belt, although the WBC has not publicly explained why the sanctioning body would move forward with Zepeda and Roach instead of elevating its interim titleholder.

If confirmed, the fight would give Zepeda the first full world title opportunity of his career. Zepeda enters the situation with a record of 31-0 and 27 knockouts, while Roach, 25-1-2 with 10 knockouts, would get another chance to compete for a lightweight championship.

Details of the date, venue and official sanction confirmation have not yet been released by the WBC or the fighters’ teams.
