Celta Vigo staged an impressive second-half comeback to defeat Girona 2-1 at the Estadio Municipal de Montilivi.
Celta Vigo secured a spectacular 2-1 victory over Girona at the Estadio Municipal de Montilivi on March 1, 2026. Ferran Jutglà’s equalizer and Vitor Reis’ decisive goal propelled the visitors to a vital three points.
Girona went into the game in 12th place in the league, looking to improve on their recent form of one win in five games. In contrast, sixth-placed Celta Vigo were looking to consolidate their European aspirations after a good run of two wins and a draw in their last three outings.
The home side started strongly, controlling early possession and creating several half chances. Girona’s sustained pressure paid off just after half an hour.
Vladyslav Vanat broke the deadlock in the 35th minute. Axel Witsel made a precise assist and Vanat fired to give Girona the deserved 1-0.
Before the break, Celta’s Ferran Jutglà received a yellow card for a foul in the 42nd minute. Girona went into the half with a small but deserved lead.
The break gave Celta Vigo a crucial chance to regroup. Manager Rafael Benítez, or whoever is managing Celta in 2026, probably demanded a response and a more attacking approach to find a way back into the contest.
Celta de Vigo emerged with renewed determination after the restart. Their efforts quickly paid off as they pushed for an equaliser.
Ferran Jutglà tied the score in the 58th minute. Óscar Mingueza made a perfectly weighted assist, which Jutglà beat with the experience of Paulo Gazzaniga and scored 1-1.
Both teams turned to their benches to inject fresh energy. Celta introduced H. Alvarez in the 59th minute, while Girona responded with T. Lemar (64′) and B. Gil (65′).
The decisive moment came in the 70th minute. Vitor Reis found the net for Celta de Vigo, completed the turn and gave the visitors a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.
A flurry of late changes and yellow cards punctuated a tense finish. Girona players Claudio Echeverri (81′) and Arnau Martínez (89′) were cautioned, as well as Celta’s Williot Swedberg (89′) for time wasting.
Despite controlling 57% of possession and registering 15 total shots, with 7 on target, Girona struggled to convert their chances, demonstrated by an expected goal (xG) of 1.63. Celta Vigo, with an xG of just 0.6 on 6 total shots (5 on goal), proved to be more clinical, largely thanks to 6 crucial saves from goalkeeper Ionuț Radu.
This vital away win sees Celta Vigo move further up the La Liga table, now sitting comfortably in 6th place with 40 points. Girona, despite an energetic effort, remains in 12th position, facing new pressure to find a way to win in the next matches.
