Sevilla staged a spectacular comeback against Real Betis in an electrifying El Gran Derbi, grabbing a 2-2 draw at Estadio La Cartuja after going two goals down.
Real Betis and Sevilla played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in Sunday’s Great Derby. Isaac Romero emerged as Sevilla’s missing hero and grabbed a crucial equalizer with just five minutes remaining.
This La Liga clash, held at the neutral La Cartuja stadium, led to a fierce rivalry between the cities. Betis, in fifth place, faced twelfth-placed Sevilla, who were looking to improve their form.
Real Betis took control early. Sevilla’s Gabriel Suazo was shown a yellow card in the 11th minute. Antony then put Betis ahead in the 16th minute with a composed finish.
Antony later received a yellow card in the 24th minute for tripping. The verdiblancos doubled their lead in the 37th minute when Abdessamad Ezzalzouli assisted Álvaro Fidalgo, who calmly scored.
Betis had a huge two-goal lead at the break. Sevilla’s management faced a major challenge. They needed to break down a resolute defense and provide offensive momentum.
Sevilla responded with immediate changes in the second half. Oso and C. Ejuke were introduced. This tactical change paid off quickly, changing the dynamic of the match.
Alexis Sánchez denied Sevilla in the 62nd minute, assisted by substitute Oso. That goal breathed new life into the contest, setting up a tense final half hour.
The game became more and more physical. Betis defenders Diego Llorente and Natan were shown yellow cards in the 75th and 82nd minutes. Sevilla pushed relentlessly for an equaliser.
The momentum turned full circle in Sevilla. Substitute Isaac Romero completed the impressive comeback in the 85th minute, heading home an assist from Djibril Sow. Romero’s spirited celebration immediately earned him a yellow card.
Despite Betis’ initial dominance, Sevilla finished with more shots on goal (6 to 2) and total shots (14 to 9). Sevilla controlled 55% of possession. Betis recorded higher expected goals (1.58 xG to 0.85 xG).
This spectacular draw sees Real Betis stay in fifth place, although they will regret letting a two-goal lead slip away. For Sevilla, the point won against their city rivals brings a morale boost and a lift.
