Julián Álvarez’s stoppage-time goal earned Atletico Madrid a crucial La Liga victory over a resilient Oviedo.
Atletico Madrid secured a spectacular 0-1 victory over host club Oviedo at the Estadio Nuevo Carlos Tartiere. The decisive goal came in stoppage time, breaking Oviedo’s strong resistance. This late strike was heartbreaking for the home team.
Atlético de Madrid arrived in Oviedo in fourth place in La Liga, with the aim of consolidating their position in the Champions League. Meanwhile, Oviedo were in the relegation zone, in desperate need of points to escape the bottom. Both clubs faced immense pressure.
The opening exchanges saw Atlético Madrid dominate possession, controlling 62% of the ball. However, Oviedo tried to get back quickly on the counterattack. The game quickly turned into a midfield battle.
Oviedo created the clearest chances in the first half. Striker Federico Viñas has made eight attempts, with three on target. However, Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak proved to be a formidable barrier, making key saves.
The physics grew as the half wore on. Oviedo’s Nacho Vidal received a yellow card in the 42nd minute. Atlético de Madrid’s Robin Le Normand also saw a yellow card just before the break in the 45th minute.
The teams entered the break deadlocked at 0-0. Oviedo had shown significant fight and created chances. Atlético de Madrid, despite their possession, needed more penetration and a clinical finish to break the score.
Coach Diego Simeone made a fundamental change at half-time, bringing on Julián Alvarez. Atlético de Madrid increased the offensive pressure after the restart. Oviedo, however, maintained their resolute defensive form.
Substitutions followed on both sides as the coaches looked for an advantage. Oviedo’s J. López and Atlético’s Nahuel Molina were booked in the 71st minute, reflecting the growing intensity of the game. The block persisted.
Just as a hard-fought draw seemed inevitable, Atlético de Madrid found their moment. In the 90th+4th minute, Julián Alvarez punched a low shot into the net. This dramatic goal at the end clinched the three points for the visitors.
The statistics tell the story of Oviedo’s missed chances. They registered 16 shots in total to Atlético’s 12 and an xG of 1.09 compared to Atlético’s 0.97. Oblak’s six crucial saves highlighted his excellent performance.
This 0-1 win strengthened Atlético Madrid’s hold on fourth place in the La Liga standings. For Oviedo, the late defeat deepens their relegation struggles, leaving them rooted to the foot of the table.
