Why Callaway’s Opus SP+ wedge fills a unique niche

We all want to hit low, spin wedges and roll the skip once and rip back into a green. Callaway is new Opus SP+ wedge is built to do just that.

So should everyone be looking for Callaway’s newest short game option?

On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, co-host Johnny Wunder explained why Callaway is now offering this unique wedge with an ultra high center of gravity.

As Wunder explained, modern wedge design was largely influenced by the Cleveland 588 wedge, which didn’t really have a super high CG. But to generate those low shots and high spin, a player can adjust his technique to play the ball into his position and trap it to produce the trajectory he desires.

“He relied on the type of player that if you had to get him up, you got him up. If you have to hit him, the technique will allow you to do that,” Wunder said. So SP+ is kind of baking for you. So if you’re a player, if you’re a good player with good hands that wants to hit it even lower and you don’t really want to play it with your right foot and just hit a hard shot and get the launch down, then this is a great wedge to have.”

This wedge immediately becomes a great option for players who want to drive the CG as high as they can with the lead bar at the top of the club, like Akshay Bhatia.

The interesting thing is Opus SP platform already had a high CG with the club’s hollow sole to take the low weight off the head. The SP+ takes this concept a step further by making that cavity larger and adding tungsten at the top.

It’s not a huge difference in launch and spin, maybe a degree, Wunder said of his testing, but it gives you the option. It’s also not a replacement for the Opus SP, just another option in the family.

“It’s kind of like the comparison I would make if you’re one (Qunatum) TD Max player and you like how it flies, but you need a little less spin, then you’re going to go to the TD head,” Wunder said. “It just gives you that little silo where you can go if you want to drive it, reduce the launch even more.”
