Day 3 of Fully Fit brought us to the holy grail of OEM facilities: Titleist Performance Institute in Oceanside, California.
TPI is not just a string; it’s the largest range you’ve ever seen, which doubles as a driving range, a 9-hole short course, a 9-hole par-3 course, a fitness center and much more. You can practically live at TPI and never need anything else to play good golf.
Jake, Johnny, and I had some time to watch Sean, Maddi, and Wadeh get their full bag gear because we had all recently been fitted by Titleist, but we each got to go through Titleist’s ball gear and ball selections while I got fit for a set of new Vokey SM11 wedges.
It was here that Maddi ended up having her “aha” moment as she found a wedge that added a new kick to her game, a low spinner. Before, she liked to play shots that went off the green, but during her adjustment, she unlocked the spinner with proper grinding (a 60.10S) and saw how much more reliable it could become.
Title Vokey SM11 Tour Chrome Wedge
Titleist Vokey Design’s new SM11 wedges feature a new precision CG position on every wedge in a loft, meaning every wedge will now perform the same way with the same shot.
Sean came with almost a full set of Titleist golf clubs, but he wasn’t convinced his irons, a Titleist T100 set, were right for him. He was right, as he increased the ball speed by about 8 mph moving to the larger T150which proved to be much more consistent as well.
While Jake didn’t fit a full bag, he did fit one GT3 driver and found something that could finally compete with his Callaway Triple Diamond Tour draw that had been so automatic for him over the summer. Its new construction actually reduced the loss of ball speed even on fouls.
At the end of the day, Titleist gave us all demo versions of the wedge sets that we fit, and we got to play the par-3 course that’s inside the TPI, along with the balls we fit.
We could even see the sunset over the Pacific Ocean. Of course it would be difficult to see the experience, but we are only halfway through this whole journey, so there is still a lot to come.
