India‘s campaign ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 reached a critical juncture after a heavy 76-run defeat for South Africa in the opening match of the Super 8 on Sunday. The defeat not only ended India’s remarkable 18-match unbeaten streak in ICC events but also cornered the defending champions.
Third in Group 1, India’s Net Run Rate (NRR) took a major hit to -3,800 – a worrying sign in a tightly contested Super 8 stage. There are two important matches ahead Zimbabwe and West Indiathe equation is clear: win both games and win them convincingly.
For a side that entered the tournament as one of the favourites, the margin of defeat to South Africa suddenly made the road to the semi-finals even more difficult. The reigning champions now need not only wins but also dominant performances to fix their NRR and regain confidence.
Under increased pressure and intense scrutiny, the former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan He drew attention with a strong suggestion of the playing XI for India’s must-win clash with Zimbabwe.
Irfan Pathan picks the changes India need to make in the playing 11 to face Zimbabwe
Speaking to Star Sports, Pathan made it clear that India should resist the urge to make wholesale changes, but insisted on one key addition – Akhar Patel.
“Axar Patel has to come in. He’s a guy who can really bat against left-handed batsmen. So frankly, he’s very good. He’s very experienced. We can use him as a floater in the batting. So that’s the first thing,” Pathan said.
Pathan highlighted Akhar’s ability to handle left-handers, which could be crucial against Zimbabwe’s batting unit. Apart from his bowling value, Akhar’s agility in the batting order adds balance to the side – a quality India seemed to lack in the previous game.
Pathan also admitted that the team management might consider bringing in a wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadavespecially with a big clash looming against the West Indies. However, Pathan cautioned against overthinking.
“Team India may think they can include Kuldeep Yadav because they have seen their attack when it comes to the West Indies team. So they may think against Zimbabwe if they include Kuldeep and give him a go before the big game against the West Indies,” he added.
“Also, yes, they are left-handed. Yes, they will think about Sanju Samson too, but I don’t want the Indian team to think too much and crack them. I think they have to make only one change when it comes to the playing XI. Akhar has to come in,” Pathan concluded.

The defending champions face a crucial moment
India are now at a crucial point in their title defence. The aura of invincibility built over 18 ICC matches has been shaken and the margin for error is virtually nil.
Against Zimbabwe, India are expected to dominate with both bat and ball. The batting unit should show intent from the outset by providing a big total or a quick chase to improve the damaged NRR. The bowling attack, meanwhile, needs sharper execution in the power plays and at the death – areas that proved costly in the loss to South Africa.
The clash with Zimbabwe is not another group stage encounter; this is a survival test. With a high-stakes battle against West Indies next up, India cannot afford another slip-up.
