The British runner clocked 30:07 in Castellon as France’s Jan Shroub beat Andreas Almgren’s men’s Euro record in 26:43.
Megan Keith has made a fine comeback this winter and her excellent results continued in Castellon on Sunday (February 22) when she took one second off Eilish McColgan’s European women’s 10km record of 30:07.
The Spanish road race has a reputation for producing fast times, and the men’s European record also came from France’s Yann Shroub as he beat Andreas Almgren’s mark by two seconds in 26:43.
Almgren equaled her old record of 26:45 behind Shrub, although Uganda’s Herbert Kibet took the win in 26:39 and Caroline Makandi Gitonga of Kenya was the first woman home in 29:34.
Not only did Keith break the record, but he also had the satisfaction of beating McColgan, who finished sixth in 30:35, as he continues his preparations to run the London Marathon in two months’ time.
McColgan ran 30:08 in Valencia in January, the same day Almgren set his European record of 26:45.
Just 12 months ago Keith felt he was at “ground zero” after being ruled out of the 2024 Paris Olympics due to injury.
The 23-year-old, who is based in Edinburgh, made a steady return to form last year but finished 10th in the 10,000m at the world championships in Tokyo.
In December, she beat Italy’s Nadia Battocletti at the European Championships in Portugal. In January, she finished 25th at the World Cross Country Champs in Florida after struggling to get out and then struggling in the heat in the final stages.
Shrubb, 29, won the Eurocross in 2023 and was ninth in the world 5,000m final last year. Like Keith, he competed at World Cross in January and finished 11th in the men’s race, while on the track he clocked 7:29.38 in the indoor 3000m earlier this month.
