“I didn’t want to come out here and run another 3:48.” – Cole HawkerWelcome to the 21st century of milling.
Before a packed house for budding fans JDL Fast Track: In Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Cole’s stool put on a great running display, consistently running 28 second 200s with aggressive front runs, and then 27 seconds over his last two 200s, running the 2nd fastest indoor mile of all time. 3 minutes, 45.94 seconds.

For fans of the historical mile, the performance is reminiscent of his performances John Landy from Australia who over 7 (!) decades ago used his opponents front run to become the 2nd man ever break 4 minutes for the mile immediately after Roger Bannister.

“My goal has always been to run my opponents into the ground as fast as possible,” Landy once said.
And Hawker certainly followed that strategy.

The answer to that question can be given in two weeks, as Hawker said Will Lear on Runnerspace: that he’s looking forward to racing (of all places!) Staten Island is lauded and fast Ocean Breeze T&F Facility in the near future USATF Indoor Championships (February 28-March 1, 2026)
